Hungarian FM Péter Szijjártó: Monopolising democracy is ‘antidemocratic’
Representatives of liberal democracies are trying to “monopolise” the concept of democracy, a “thoroughly antidemocratic approach”, Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s foreign minister, told a panel discussion at the Athens Democracy Forum on Friday.
All countries are democratic as long as its people can decide their and their nation’s fate, a statement by the foreign ministry cited Szijjártó as saying. “Democracy needs no further qualification,” he said.
Regarding the rule of law in Hungary, Szijjártó said “lectures and criticism rooted solely in the fact that we have a conservative, patriotic, Christian Democratic government in power.”
“Viktor Orbán is the most democratic leader in Europe,” he said.
Hungarian foreign policy is driven by representing national interests, with the government aiming to forge pragmatic cooperations without interfering with other countries’ domestic affairs, Szijjártó said. Political stability is instrumental in that process, as it enables effective actions and representing national interests, he said.

In the discussion panel also attended by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, a Belarussian opposition leader, Szijjártó said the European Union’s foreign policy toolbox has proven to have limited success in similar crises.
He called for a thorough discussion on the effectivity of sanctions. Threatening with sanctions will have little effect if the sanctions themselves are ineffective, he said.
Sanctions may, in fact, be “hypocritical while larger member states conclude lucrative deals with countries they continue to lambast loudly,” Szijjártó said, citing China as an example, where certain officials are facing restrictions while China was the EU’s largest trading partner last year.
Tsikhanouskaya said EU sanctions were the bloc’s only means to place pressure on Belarus. Responding a question, she said she saw all EU member states as democracies.

Péter Szijjártó is 100% right and he expresses his ideas clearly and precisely. A refreshing contrast with the double talk and obfuscation we get from the liberal, far-left.
I would be happy to see him as Hungary’ future prime minister.
Name one country who interferes with just about every other nations domestic affairs
Although Mr Szijjártó isn’t as attractive as Ms Varga, eh, István! Nudge nudge wink wink! Or do you bat for both sides!
While a couple of people are ganging-up on me, a huge majority of Hungarians and most of the people who endured Soviet occupation agree with me.
So, spout-off your hate all you want but we will continue to protect or border from illegal invasion and our children from lgbtgp.
Mqagyarország a magyaroké!
That’a easy Frank. I can name the United States who has managed to interfere in most countries’ domestistic affairs, from CIA backed coups in Latin America and Africa to US meddling in Canadian and Australian elections. The US sure has interfere in a lot of countries’ affairs.
“Viktor Orbán is the most democratic leader in Europe,” he said (Szijjártó). Now that’s a bit of a porky pie as we all well know. Sounds like he’s in the playground!
Some US administrations were more aggressive and interfered more with the internal politics of other countries while other US administrations didn’t. Unfortunately, the “deep state” is firmly embedded and yields the real power in America.
President Trump was against intervention. He wanted to “drain the swamp” and make US democracy work as intended by the founding fathers. Unfortunately, the globalist, socialist, communist traitors turned on him. That is treason.
We should remember that President Trump was the first US President in a long time that didn’t start any wars. The same Nobel committee that gave Hussein Obama a Nobel price for being black. Obama did start the war in Libya that is responsible for the migrant invasion.
Biden was part of this interventionist mob but He no longer knows what he is going or where he is. Biden will never be a legitimate president. Votes must be earned, NOT STOLEN.
István, reading replies to some of your comments, it would appear to be more than just a couple of people!
I don’t think so. Most Hungarians agree with me. It is demonstrated by the overwhelming number of Hungarians that oppose the migrant invasion and keeping the lgptq out of our schools. Protect the children.
What we have is a couple of like you that sees everything through their world. Various estimates on the number of homosexuals put their number at less than 5% of population. The aggressive, radical lgptg probably constitute just a small fraction of these. You are under the mistaken belief that because you are, everyone else is.
The real issue here is not what a couple spout about me but the statement of FM Szijjártó in defense of Hungary.
Most of us may well agree with you István but no one else carries the hatred and anger for others as you do. That’s what attracts the comments on your posts.
